Interesting revised guidelines for MOM hip montoring in Britian and New Zeland

Medsafe and the NZOA (New Zeland Orthopedic Association) are providing this advice to you so that health care professionals can provide consistent advice to patients that seek consultations regarding their implanted hip replacement. (this is the same updated guideline the British use.)

 I find the recommendations interesting in that reviewing the second to the last column,
  • both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients are recommended to be followed annually for life!
  • Both should have MRIs in all cases
  • Blood tests on both types of patients
  • if the Blood tests are above 7 parts per billion, additional tests should be run every 3 months.
  • consider revision if the blood metals are above this same metric the 2nd time around coupled with abnormal imaging
