Who is Judge David Katz and why is he a critical person in the Depuy hip recall?

We should be getting some news today or tomorrow on the results of the first meeting with David Katz, the  federal district court judge who was appointed to oversee the MDL for the hip recall legal filings.  I don’t know anything about him so I decided to look into his background since; after all, he will be making decisions critical to those who are filing suits based on the issues surrounding the hip implants.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Katz received a B.S. from Ohio State University in 1955, and a J.D. from Ohio State University College of Law in 1957. He was in private practice in Toledo, Ohio from 1957 to 1994, focusing on corporate law.
Katz was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Katz was nominated by President Bill Clinton on August 12, 1994, to a seat vacated by Alvin I. Krenzler. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 7, 1994, and received his commission on October 11, 1994. He assumed senior status on January 1, 2005.

Rather than summarize these, as the opinions seem to be varied shall we say, I merely took the links that represent a range of comments.  (cases filed before Judge Katz in 2011.
